The Caribbean Commercial Bank has donated EC$12,500.00 to the Anguilla Cricket Association to help finance the 2006 Local Limited Overs Cricket Tournament now taking place on the island.
A cheque for that amount was presented to President of the Association, Benjamin Hughes, by CCB’s Marketing Assistant, Cleo Hamm. Speaking at the opening ceremony on January 28 at the Webster Park, he said the Bank was the proud sponsor of local cricket, thus helping to keep the sport alive on the island.
Replying, Mr. Benjamin said CCB had been a sponsor of local cricket for over fifteen years and had recently increased its sponsorship from EC$10,000 to $12,500 and in addition had provided a quantity of trophies bringing the total sponsorship funds toabout $15,000.
He said there were five teams in the cricket league comprising CuisinArt Resort (for the first time), Cap Juluca, the Farrington, the Police and the Schools.
“Most people are questioning the status of cricket in Anguilla,” Hughes went on. “I am happy to say that Anguilla’s cricket is second to none in the Leeward Islands... and we are looking at every possible way of improving our cricket. In April this year we will be sending three youngsters to England. They are Monson Hodge, Dillon Skellekie and Lyndel Richardson; and they will be in the UK for one year, learning the fine arts of the game, developing their skills and will then return home to make Anguilla and themselves proud. In fact, we are looking for them to make it to the West Indies team in a short time. When that happens, Anguilla, CCB and the Anguilla Cricket Association will be proud of what they accomplish.”
He added that the association was looking forward to an exciting cricket season this year and called for the support of the general public.
Cardigan Connor said that as Cricket Development Officer he was in need of the support of everyone in order to achieve good performance on the playing field. He spoke about the importance of sport to the positive development of the youngster and was grateful for the financial contribution from the Caribbean Commercial Bank.
Another speaker was Matthew Jordan, President of the Police cricket team and Secretary of the Anguilla Cricket Association. He said the association had a number of challenges this year but he was convinced that, with the strength and commitment of the national team, would achieve its goals.
He stated that a few improvements had been made for this year’s CCB tournament. They included the awarding of trophies for various categories of players including the cricketer with the most catches, the best disciplined team and a man of the match award. He added that the awards were a means of encouraging players to perform at a high level in the competition.
Bishop Errol Brooks, who delivered the invocation, expressed appreciation to CCB for its sponsorship role and encouraged the cricket teams to give of their best performance in the tournament.
