AT&T Wireless (NYSE: AWE) today announced the award of a license to offer cellular telephone services in Anguilla, British West Indies. The license award concludes an application process managed by the Government of Anguilla.

The Anguilla license furthers AT&T Wireless’ commitment to the Caribbean region and the company’s strategy of offering seamless wireless coverage and value-added services to its North American customers. AT&T Wireless provides the largest global voice and data coverage area of any North American carrier. The Company currently provides service in Antigua, Barbuda, Barbados, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and it has acquired licenses to offer services in Curacao, Jamaica, St. Barth’s, St. Martin, Guadeloupe and Martinique.

AT&T Wireless plans to build a GSM/GPRS/EDGE network in Anguilla, which will bring the latest advanced wireless voice and data services to the island. Additionally, the GSM network will provide roaming services for tourists and business visitors from the USA and Europe, helping to increase the attractiveness of Anguilla as a destination for both work and play.
The company is currently finalizing the terms of the license and plans for network construction, and it is expected to announce more details, including the launch date for service, in the coming months. AT&T Wireless intends to build a local management team in Anguilla and create a number of jobs involved in the operation of the network, retail sales and customer service.
AT&T Wireless is committed to working with local partners in the region. In Anguilla, AT&T Wireless has been in discussions with the Caribbean Commercial Bank (Anguilla) Limited and local businesspersons to develop a partnership to own and operate the Anguilla network.
